So exciting! Ghiray Ghebreslassie won the 2016 Men’s Division of the NYC Marathon on Nov. 6, making him the youngest winner in the marathon’s history! So just who is this incredible athlete? We have the five things you need to know about him, here!
1. He is the youngest winner ever of the NYC Marathon at just 20 years old.
Ghirmay Ghebreslassie, 20, who is originally from Eritrea, became the youngest champion ever of the annual race on Nov. 6 when he beat out tens of thousands of runners at the 45th annual TCS New York Marathon. He finished at a truly amazing race time of 2:07:51, which is beyond fast! It’s safe to say Ghirmay has a very bright future ahead of him.

2. He also won the 2015 World Championships and became the youngest winner to do so.
Like his amazing feat at the 2016 NYC Marathon, in 2015 Ghirmay won the 2015 World Championships In Athletic in Beijing, China. In doing this, he became the youngest winner ever of the World Championships. Seriously, Ghirnay is unstoppable, and we’re sure that he will win many future marathons!
3. His gym teacher noticed his talent and encouraged him to take up running.
Ghirmay has been a talented runner since childhood, and his physical education teacher spotted his talent in school when he was running with his friends. The teacher encouraged him to run competitively, and the rest, as they say, is history! Talk about the best teacher ever, for noticing his astounding talent.
4. Ghirmay’s father was originally opposed to him becoming a runner.
His dad was initially against Ghirmay wanting to run. He was afraid that his decision to become a professional marathoner would detract from his studies. However, as soon as he saw his talented his son was and all the success that he was having on the track, his concerns subsided. What an amazing dad to let his son follow his heart and pursue his dreams!
5. He also competed in the 2016 London Marathon.
Ghirmay came in a very respectable fourth place at the 2016 London Marathon in spring 2016. While he might not have won the gold, he achieved something truly incredible at this marathon — his personal best time! Ghirmay finished the race with a time of 2:07:46, so he definitely should be proud of having such an amazing year in 2016.
