By now, Travis Tritt, 53, must have realized he’s made a huge mistake! The country star took to Twitter on November 3, following the CMA Awards, and went off on Beyonce’s performance with the Dixie Chicks. Travis took offense with the fact that a pop star like Beyonce would perform at the CMAs, rather than just country stars. It got pretty tangled from there, as her fans called him out on his tweets. He just dug himself a deeper hole!
It started out with a (bad) joke: “FYI – My band and I are gonna try to work up Beyoncé’s “All The Single Ladies” for all you die hard country fans who love traditional music!” Kind of a dad joke, but not the worst thing he could say. Clearly, Travis had just seen Beyonce tear up the stage with the Dixie Chicks, doing “Daddy Lessons”.
But then he took it too far, tweeting “I want to know when the BET or SoulTrain awards are gonna ask a country artist to perform on their awards show?” Some fans called him out on the tweet, saying they believed it was racist, because he mentioned two awards shows affiliated with black people. Travis, come on!
He continued, tweeting: “As I see it, country music has appealed to millions for many years. We can stand on our own and don’t need pop artists on our awards shows. I love honest to God country music and feel the need to stand up for it at all costs. We don’t need pop or rap artists to validate us.” Yikes. Needless to say, the Beyhive took him to task:
@Travistritt You don't get to define an entire genre of music because you don't like the artist.

@Travistritt Modern country grew from blues, folk, Americana, etc. "Purity" in country music isn't a thing unless you're talking about race.

Kinda sad to grow up listening to @Travistritt on CMT only to find out he's an insecure racist asshole. Beyoncé got these folks shook.

@Travistritt Didn't have a problem with Justin Timberlake singing at last years CMAs. #Hypocrisy

@Travistritt it's not as if she took your precious stage and performed "formation." She sang HER country song with country artists…relax

@Travistritt And how do you know having Beyonce on the CMA'S didn't create some new country music fans? Why put yourself in a bubble?

Can we talk about how Beyonce isn’t a rapper? Like, at all? Clearly, Travis knew how much of an uproar he caused, because the next day he tweeted: “…Never thought I would ever be labeled as a racist.”
HollywoodLifers, do you think Travis was out of line? Tell us in the comments!
