Sara Shepard, the author of the ‘Pretty Little Liars’ series, ‘The Heiresses’ and more, has released her new book, ‘The Amateurs.’ HollywoodLife.com talked to Sara EXCLUSIVELY about her recent release, the ending of ‘PLL,’ her favorite character and more!
Tell me about the inspiration behind this book?
So I loved the podcast Serial. I was really intocold cases and this mystery that the journalist was solving. I decided I wanted to write my own story about young characters, kind of looking into their own cold case. The Amateurs is a whodunit, it’s full of twists and turns, and I think fans of Pretty Little Liars will like it.
How does it differ from Pretty Little Liars?
So with PLL there was this A, and A was making their lives horrible. And it was this anonymous person and kind of stalking them. These characters in The Amateurs are taking matters into their own hands. They are actively solving something. They are looking for the truth. I think they are stronger character, they’re a little big more driven. It’s more of an investigation, more of a mystery versus Pretty Little Liars, which was more of a psychological soap opera. You also hear from two guys in this book, which is a bit of a departure for me because I’m used to talking about girls. There are two guy characters, so you hear the other side of a couple of romances.
Were you inspired to write in a male point of view because of Serial?
Yeah, kind of. I also have a lot of fans of Pretty Little Liars, and I thought I’m not representing this other side of teenagers who also read and are into mysteries.
Pretty Little Liars is coming to an end after 7 seasons… What are your thoughts?
It’s the end of an era. It’s like I never thought the day would come. I didn’t want it to come. I love that it has been on TV. They have done such a good job with it. The following behind it is amazing, the Pretty Little Liars fan clubs are amazing, I love to see people dressed up as the characters for Halloween. It is just crazy to me. I’m sad but at the same time I’m happy that they’re going out on a high. They’re going out on their terms. The story is going to end. It’s going to have — I hope — a good ending. I don’t know. I was on the set last week, though, and all of the actors and actresses and everyone working on the show was so sad. It was their last day of shooting, and they were so sad for it to be ending. We’re all mourning together.
You created the Liars, is there a certain one that’s your favorite?
I love Alison. Alison is a little bit in the show than she is in the books. But I love her on the show, too. But I love her in the books. She was really out there. She had this crazy history and was this dark, menacing character that I loved getting into her brain. On the show, I love all of them. I have a soft spot for each and every one of them. I just think they have amazing storylines and they play those characters so well. I hope at the end of the show everything turns out great for them. I hope nobody dies. I’ve heard these rumors that Spencer is going to die, I hope nobody dies. I don’t know anything. Hopefully people won’t take that to mean anything, but I hope they all have happy endings.
Is something you want to see in the final season?
I feel like so many things have already appeared. I was so excited when Mona was first A. I was really excited about the kind of family twist with CeCe and all of that. Would I love to see twins? Of course I would! I’ve heard some twin rumors. And I am an Emison fan, so I would love to see an Emily and Alison love happen.
Do you have a next project coming up?
I’m working on the second Amateurs book and then I have third one to write. The Amateurs has been optioned for TV. I can’t say where. The deal isn’t done yet. I’d love to get more involved in the TV world. I would kind of like to try that in the future.
