If Zayn Malik didn’t join One Direction, his life would be completely different right now — but if he could go back now, he says he for sure wouldn’t have signed that contract. Wait, WHAT, WHY?!
Clearly, things didn’t work out for Zayn Malik, 23, as a member of One Direction, but teaming up with four other guys to form the group has clearly benefited his career: He’s now a thriving solo artist on his own. But, despite his current success, the singer says, if he could give his younger self advice, it would be not to join the X-Factor boy band.
“I was very ignorant at 17 — blind beyond my years,” he tells ES magazine. “I would say, ‘Do your research and be a bit more prepared about certain situations before you make a decision.” Obviously, the 23-year-old is grateful for the experience, but that doesn’t mean he would choose the same path if he could do it over.
“I probably wouldn’t have [signed] — I would’ve waited a couple more extra years,” he explains. “Just so that I had that time to just get my head around being a famous person. I’ve never been able to have, what’s the word? Anonymity. If I could go back, I’d have a few more years of anonymity.”
Zayn has been very open in the past about how he felt too controlled in 1D, and wanted to break away to have more of a say in his career, which is exactly what he did in March 2015. And, don’t worry — he admitted in his autobiography that he’s “proud” of what he did with the band, and described it as an “integral part of my history.” It’s all good here, guys!
HollywoodLifers, what do you think of Zayn saying he wouldn’t join One Direction if he was able to go back? Do you think that’s kind of harsh…or does it make total sense?
