It was a case of “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” During the 2016 NBA Semifinals, the Warriors came back from a 3-1 deficit to win three straight games to send the Thunder packing. Instead of joining Russell Westbrook, 27, Steven Adams, 23, Jerami Grant, 22, and the rest of the Thunder in plotting revenge, Kevin jumped ship. The hottest free-agent in the NBA signed with the Warriors, which left a bad taste in his teammates’ mouths.
The Thunder are “going to want to beat [Kevin] really bad,” Draymond Green, 26, of Golden State said ahead of the game, per ESPN. “He’s going to want to beat them really bad. In turn, we’re going to want to beat them really bad because we want him to beat them really bad.”
The Dubs and Thunder will meet four times this NBA season, but after this match, these two squads won’t step foot on the same court until Jan. 18, 2017. What will happen in between this game and that one? Shade, plenty of shade. Russell has spent the last four months subtly dissing his former friend, according to SB Nation. When asked if Kevin’s departure “made it sting more,” Russell asked “Sting for who?”
In Sept. 2016, after Kevin insisted that he and Russell were “still cool,” Westbrook acted like it was news to him. When asked about their “friendship,” Russell said, “I haven’t talked to him.” Perhaps these two will have a chance to chat when they go face-to-face on the court for this game?
