The Chicago Cubs are headed to Game 7 of the World Series…and a big part of that is because of their stellar shortstop, Addison Russell. At just 22 years old, Addison had an historic Game 6, and now, the country can’t stop talking about him. Get to know him here!
1. He landed on the Cubs after a shocking 2014 trade
Addison Russell was just 20 years old when the Chicago Cubs shocked fans by bringing him on as a shortstop and giving up two starting pitchers, Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel, to the Oakland Athletics. It seemed especially crazy because the Cubs were already fully stocked in the Shortstop department — but clearly, nabbing Addison was a top notch decision!
2. He’s already made history for the Cubs
In Game Six against the Cleveland Indians in 2016, Addison became just the 19th player ever to hit a Grand Slam in the World Series. This was also the first time there’s been a World Series Grand Slam since 2005, and Addison’s six RBIs in the game tied an MLB record for the most RBIs by a single player in a World Series match.
3. He’s family man
Even though Addison is still young, he’s already started building a family of his own. He and girlfriend, Melisa Reidy, welcomed their first child in August 2015 and were married just five months later.
4. He skipped college for baseball
Addison signed a letter of intent to play for Auburn University, but instead, he was chosen by the Oakland Athletics in the 2012 MLB Draft, receiving a $2.625 million signing bonus.
5. Baseball isn’t the only sport he excels at
Clearly, Addison is a natural athlete — not only was he an all-star baseball player in high school, but he also played running back for his high school’s football team!
HollywoodLifers, are you surprised by Addison’s showing in the World Series? Do you think the Cubs will win the whole thing?
