It wouldn’t be a night honoring country music without Randy Travis. The singer, who suffered from a serious stroke in 2013, made a rare appearance at the 2016 CMA Awards, during an opening that had everyone crying. Grab your tissues before watching this video!
Randy Travis is back, and every single country star is ready to honor him. The opening included hits from some of the best in country music over the past fifty years — hosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood, Vince Gill, Ben Haggard (the son of Merle Haggard), Alabama, Charlie Pride, Charlie Daniels, Dwight Yokam, Reba McIntyre, Clint Black, Ricky Skaggs, and Alan Jackson.
Then they all lined up and sang “Forever and Ever,” the hit song by Randy, 57. At the end of the verse, Carrie introduced him, and he joined them, singing along, “Amen,” the final word. Everyone in the audience was standing, including Miranda Lambert who was one of many crying.

Earlier this week, the icon surprised Kane Brown when he showed up to America’s Morning Show while Kane played “Three Wooden Crosses,” the song that won Randy the CMA Award for Song of the Year in 2003. Randy was also honored last month when he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, and sang “Amazing Grace.”
“Randy Travis was the forefather that kind of laid it down,” Garth Brooks said on during the ceremony. “Tell me some other artist in some other genre ever in the history of mankind who has taken a format, turned it around back to where it was coming from and made it bigger than it was. It’s never happened, and it will never happen again.”
His wife, Mary Davis-Travis, spoke on his behalf at the event. “Today is the greatest day of Randy’s celebrated music career. Randy wants to thank you for listening and loving him. Randy stared death in the face, but death blinked. Today, God’s proof of a miracle stands before you,” she said while he proudly stood beside her . “Tonight, I want to give back to the voice of Randy Travis. If you’ll stand.”
With that he sang “Amazing Grace,” shocking all since he struggles to complete full sentences following his stroke. However it was incredible to see him at the CMA Awards looking healthy and happy! Were you shocked to see him on the carpet? Let us know.
