Number 16 is officially off the market! Despite cocaine being found in Jose Fernandez’s body the night of his fatal boat crash, Miami Marlins will continue to retire the baseball icon’s jersey digit out of respect. Read all the details, right here.
When news broke out of Jose Fernandez‘s, 24, sudden death, sports fans all over the world were crying. But then, something interesting happened that made half of those sorrowful fans change their minds. New evidence showed that Jose was under the influence of cocaine and booze the night of the deathly boat crash, and suddenly, he wasn’t the innocent victim anymore. Reddit users were outraged, and some even said he DESERVED what happened to him because he wasn’t being careful.
Despite the differences of opinion, the Miami Marlins are staying true to their primal decision — to retire the baseball player’s jersey number. This means that no other Marlins player will ever wear number 16 again, according to team owner Jeffrey Loria who spoke with TMZ. Even though Jose was partying it up and being irresponsible, reliable sources close to the athlete say he was NOT driving the boat, so we can’t really blame him for the tragic accident.
Additionally, Jose’s lawyer claims he was on the phone with someone when the boat hit some rocks at high-speed, and could hear the baseball player giving directions to the person who was steering. After coke was found in Jose’s body, the case turned from a freakish accident into a homicide investigation. But if there’s one person who will forever believe his innocence, it’s pregnant girlfriend Maria Arias. Before the crash, Jose was photographed rubbing Maria’s belly in a sweet family photo, which he captioned “I’m in love.” Are you crying yet, because WE ARE!
