Ryan Lochte has a lot of love for Cheryl Burke and ‘DWTS.’ In his first interview post-elimination on ‘GMA,’ Ryan expressed his sincere gratitude to his partner and the show for helping him get through his robbery scandal, what he called the ‘lowest point’ in his life.
“No matter how hard I get knocked down, I can still get up and keep fighting, and just keep moving and staying positive,” Ryan said on Good Morning America on Nov. 1. “I had her [Cheryl Burke] to really help me with that, ’cause I did get knocked down. I was at the lowest point in my life. But I mean, I’m here, I lasted until week eight.”
The Olympic swimmer, 32, was eliminated on the Oct. 31 episode of Dancing With The Stars after an individual performance and a dance-off with Marilu Henner, 64. Ryan joined the show immediately after admitting he lied about being robbed at a gas station in Rio de Janeiro during the Olympics. The incident became a huge controversy, and his first dance was interrupted by two protestors who stormed the ballroom floor wearing anti-Lochte t-shirts.
After the shocking elimination, host Erin Andrews, 38, asked Ryan what he learned from the show. “I learned a lot about myself, that I could… no matter how hard I get knocked down I can keep fighting,” he said. “I’m sad I’m going home but everyone here has touched me in a special place.”
Ryan also posted a sweet photo on Instagram of Team Cherloch. He captioned the picture, “We had a great run. Thank you for being so patient with me and teaching me how to dance. Ur truly amazing person and dancer. Our friendship will last forever. Thank you!!! #teamcherloch #dwts.”
