Six-year-old Daniel Ramirez tragically passed away just two weeks after contracting a mysterious disease that features Polio-like symptoms — including strokes and paralysis. Even scarier, this deadly neurological virus is spreading throughout Washington state and has doctors completely perplexed! Get the terrifying details here.
As of Oct. 30, a mysterious illness that hospitalized several children in Washington state turned deadly when six-year-old Daniel Ramirez died, leaving doctors stumped and worried. After experiencing slurred speech, drooling, incontinence, and leg pain, Daniel was admitted to Seattle Children’s Hospital on Oct. 15 — he passed away just 15 days later.

His parents, Marijo de Guzman and Jose Ramirez of Bellingham, Washington, at first thought that Daniel simply had a bad stomachache, but then further tests at the hospital revealed he was one of hundreds of children to have recently contracted a rare virus called acute flaccid myelitis (AFM). The disease attacks the brain and spinal cord and can result in death.
Between Oct. 21 and Oct. 27, Daniel suffered two strokes in the hospital. There wasn’t much doctors could do for him as the disease was already too advanced for much treatment. The little boy was tragically pronounced brain dead at 1:33 p.m. on Oct. 30 but Daniel was kept on a ventilator until Oct. 31. He was one of eight children admitted to Seattle Children’s Hospital with AFM, according to The Kansas City Star.
“It saddens us to announce that Daniel passed away on Sunday, October 30, 2016, surrounded by his family,” Daniel’s family announced on their Facebook page titled Praying For Daniel Ramirez. “Daniel was an amazingly sweet little boy, who could put a smile on anyone’s face. He had a personality that made him loved by everyone who ever met him.”
The statement continued, “Daniel was taken from us too soon, but his memory will live on, and he will never be forgotten. Rest In Peace Sweet Daniel!” And while the disease, a fever that leads to paralysis in children, was identified back in 2014, the medical community remains largely ignorant about what causes the illness and how to treat it. And what’s scarier, with more than 100 children hospitalized with the disease, many of them have yet to make a full recovery.
In fact, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has issued a report warning that there has been a surge in the number of children struck down by AFM this year — experts fear this outbreak could be worse than previous ones.
Keith Van Haren, a child neurologist at Stanford University School of Medicine, told The Atlantic last year that doctors don’t know how to treat or prevent the illness. “It actually looks just like polio, but that term really freaks out the public-health people,” he said. SO scary!
Our hearts are breaking for Daniel’s loved ones. HollywoodLifers, please leave your condolences for his friends and family here.
