“It literally looks like a bomb exploded in the bus,” Baltimore Police spokesman T.J. Smith said. “It is catastrophic damage.” The crash occurred before 7 a.m. in the 3800 block of Frederick Avenue, and T.J. said the school bus was headed east when it struck a Ford Mustang and a pillar on the side of the road before entering oncoming traffic. The school bus ended up ripping through the driver’s side of the MTA bus, killing the school bus driver along with five others.
In a video from CNN affiliate WBAL, the school bus can be seen wedged into the side of the commuter bus as firefighters surround the scene. Rescuers were able to transport 10 injured people to local hospitals, but investigators are still working to pinpoint what caused the tragic accident.
In fact, an aide who was on the school bus and survived the crash may be able to help investigators shed light on what happened, according to T.J. Due to the fact that there were no skid marks on the road, the police spokesman said that “something catastrophic took place,” and that it’s something they’re “continuing to investigate.”
The injuries sustained during the crash range from minor to critical, according to police, and no information on the identities of those who died or were injured has been released. But Baltimore Fire Chief Niles Ford did say the scene was unlike anything that his first responders had ever seen, and that emergency crews were still trying to access certain areas within the crash scene.
