Zayn Malik is getting real about his ongoing battle with anxiety. The ‘Pillowtalk’ singer admits that his mental health disorder was actually more ‘manageable’ when he was with One Direction. Read his full heartfelt confession, right here.
Zayn Malik, 23, has been doing really well on his own since branching out from One Direction, but if there’s one thing he misses about the boy band, it’s the sense of having a family. We first got wind of Zayn’s anxiety in Sept. when he cancelled a concert due to nerves. Since then, girlfriend Gigi Hadid has been doing her best to calm her man’s anxiety, he just wishes he had additional support from his One Direction crew. “When I was in One Direction, my anxiety issues were huge but, within the safety net of the band, they were at least manageable,” he writes in an excerpt from his self-titled book, which comes out TOMORROW (Nov. 1)!
“As a solo performer, I felt much more exposed, and the psychological stress of performing had just gotten to be too much for me to handle—at that moment, at least,” he continues. Being in One Direction must have felt like an extended family full of loving brothers, but now that the boy band is on hiatus, everyone is off doing their own thing. Harry Styles has been dipping his toe in the acting pool, while Niall Horan has launched a solo career of his own with his “This Town” single.
Even though Zayn is free to sing about more adult matters now, like sex, he wants everyone to know that he’s proud of his One Direction roots! “I can honestly say I’m proud of a lot of stuff from the One Direction days,” he admits in a different chapter of Zayn. “I’m not sure people realize that, but I am. I’ve got the memorabilia — the platinum discs we received with every album — all over my house.” We don’t know if One Direction is done for good, but we hope they’ll reunite someday soon!
