So sad! Brad Pitt’s relationship with oldest son Maddox has remained terribly fractured following the star’s split with Angelina Jolie. HollywoodLife.com has spoken EXCLUSIVELY to a family therapist who assures us that all hope is not lost for them building back the bond they once shared.
“For Brad, the key to building a relationship with Maddox is to follow his lead and to maintain a consistent presence. Many teenagers have strong reactions when their parents go through a divorce and may choose to not participate in visits or phone calls. It is important that the parent not take these reactions personally, but continue to provide a presence in regular phone calls, emails or visits,” Family therapist Jennifer Rhodes tells HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY. “The consistency can be very helpful to teens who are struggling to make sense of what is happening to their parents.”
“Brad also should not get stuck on the amount of time spent with Maddox. The quality of the parent-child relationship is related to the quality of the interactions, not the amount of time spent.” That’s a good thing because father and son have reportedly only had one meeting since the alleged abuse incident aboard the family’s private plane Sept. 15 that led to a Department of Children and Family Services investigation against the actor.
During their only visit, Brad and Maddox were with a therapist and it reportedly ended in disaster as Mad didn’t want to be there. The investigation regarding possible abuse by Brad against his 15-year-old adoptive son is ongoing, so it looks like any future visits will also be monitored. This has to be so crushing for Brad to be apart from Maddox and his five other kids as he remains under the microscope for if he’s been physically or verbally abusive to any of his other children in the past.
