Senator Mark Kirk is under fire — as he should be — for making fun of Rep. Tammy Duckworth’s Thai-Chinese family during a debate on Oct. 27. Here’s everything you need to know about Duckworth, the U.S. Army veteran who is challenging Kirk for his seat in the Senate.
Republican Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk slammed Democratic Rep. Tammy Duckworth during a debate on Oct. 27, making a racially inappropriate comment about her family. Here are five things to know about her!
1. She is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Illinois’s 8th district.
Born Ladda Tammy Duckworth, she has been the U.S. Representative for Illinois’s 8th congressional district since 2013. She is also the first Asian American woman to be elected to Congress in the state of Illinois!
2. Duckworth is a U.S. Army veteran.
She lost both her legs in the Iraq war — making her the first disabled woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives — and her father is a U.S. marine. “My family has served this nation in uniform, going back to the Revolution,” Duckworth said at the debate. “I’m a daughter of the American Revolution. I’ve bled for this nation. But I still want to be there in the Senate when the drums of war sound. Because people are quick to sound the drums of war, and I want to be there to say this is what it costs, this is what you’re asking us to do…Families like mine are the ones that bleed first.”
3. Mark Kirk made a racially insensitive comment about Duckworth’s family after she said the above.
“I had forgotten that your parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington,” he said in response. Yikes.
4. Duckworth is not afraid to respond to criticism and insults!
After the debate, she tweeted a photo of her with her parents along with a pointed message towards Kirk:

Has the Kirk campaign apologized? No.
5. She’s well-educated.
Duckworth attended Singapore American School and the International School Bangkok, skipping the ninth grade and graduating with honors from McKinley High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. She then earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science at the University of Hawaii, and graduated from George Washington University with a Master of Arts in international affairs. She was working on her Ph.D. in political science at Northern Illinois University, but was deployed to Iraq in 2004.
