OMG, best…news…ever! NBC’s live musicals have proven to be some of the most entertaining moments on TV that we’ve seen in recent years, and they’ve totally upped the ante for their newest effort, signing Jennifer Lopez, 47, to star in Bye Bye Birdie Live! While the beloved musical is a favorite of theater buffs, it might not be as well-known as the network’s previous efforts The Sound of Music Live!, Peter Pan Live! and The Wiz! With an icon of her magnitude, she’ll be bringing the story to millions of brand new fans.
“To have a superstar like Jennifer Lopez starring in this classic show, which every high school in America has done, will ensure that our holiday musicals continue to be must-see events for the whole family,” NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt confirmed in a statement released Oct. 27.
“Broadway musicals and films fueled my childhood and Bye Bye Birdie was one of my favorites,” Jennifer, who will also serve as executive producer, added in the big announcement. “I’m proud to be a part of the NBC family with Shades of Blue and I thought it would be a blast to take on one of their big live musicals.”
The show will be based on the 1960 musical and 1963 film inspired by Elvis Presley being drafted into the army. Rock ‘n roll sensation Conrad Birdie has been drafted, causing his agent and songwriter Albert Peterson to panic. His secretary and sweetheart Rosie Alvarez comes up with a publicity stunt for one final song and appearance for Conrad, who will perform “One Last Kiss” and plant one on a lucky member of his fan club from Sweet Apple, Ohio. The town then develops a series case of Birdie fever. Of course Jennifer is PERFECT to play Rosie and will absolutely slay in this part.
