This is so scary. Amy Purdy is lucky to be alive after a terrifying health scare! The world-class snowboarder found out she had a life threatening condition from overworked muscles. She provided an update Oct. 27, and is still in the hospital recovering. Get the details on her condition here.
Paralympic bronze medalist, Amy Purdy, 36, is “grateful to be alive” after she developed a very serious condition called, Rhabdomyolysis, or Rhabdo for short. This is a condition caused by muscle injury. Basically, Rhabdo can occur when the muscles get damaged or overworked to the point where muscle contents, fibers and proteins can release into the bloodstream. Eventually, this could seriously damage the kidneys and become fatal, if not treated at the right time.
Luckily, Amy caught it early. She explained on her Instagram, Oct. 27, that she’s had friends with the same condition which caused her to act quickly after seeing her muscles swell up. Amy was training to prepare for the snowboard season and revealed that she pushed herself too hard after an intense pull-up workout. She thought she was just sore, until abnormal swelling drove her to take a trip to the ER. So scary.
In case you didn’t know, when she was 19, Amy contracted Neisseria meningitis, a form of bacterial meningitis. It attacked her circulatory system and she had to have her both legs amputated, and lost both kidneys as a result. The model and actress had a lifesaving kidney transplant, which she says is thanks to her father. So, Rhabdo could hit her in different ways than it would effect someone who hasn’t had a transplant. Amy did update fans on her Instagram page that her kidney has been holding up strong, and that her numbers have been heading in the right direction, though! Amy revealed she’s been in the hospital for about four days now.
Shortly after, she posted another update to her Instagram letting everyone know she is still continuing to improve. The former Dancing With The Stars Contestant did admit that if she hadn’t gone to the hospital when she did, it could have been a different and more fatal outcome. Omg.
Speaking of DWTS, Amy’s old partner, Derek Hough, 31, took to his Instagram to post a sweet message to Amy, wishing her a speedy recovery. He uploaded a photo (below) of a drawn picture, with the heartfelt caption, “I hope your recovery is quick my beautiful [Amy Purdy]… In moments of adversity you defy the odds. And you will continue to through this recovery. Thinking of you my strong inspiring woman”. This is amazing!

Amy vowed to continue to post updates on her Instagram page throughout her recovery. She used the social media platform to educate everyone on the condition that she says could come off as mild and can be innocently brought on. The athlete thanked everyone for their love and support, as well as her husband, Daniel Gale, who seems to be taking only the best care of his stunning wife. We hope Amy is doing well, and we wish her a speedy recovery!
