This story just keeps getting sadder. Jose Fernandez was tragically killed in a boating accident on Sept. 25, and now the situation has become a homicide investigation. New reports claim the driver in the crash was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. We have all of the devastating details, right here.
Unfortunately, the family of Jose Fernandez will have to wait a little longer to have some closure after the 24-year-old Marlins pitcher tragically died in a late-night boating accident on Sept. 25. TMZ reports that the investigation has now switched gears towards homicide since all three victims of the crash allegedly reeked of booze, meaning that whoever was driving was under the influence of alcohol.
TMZ got a hold of the search warrant affidavit that revealed that all of the men “had a strong odor of alcohol emanating from them,” while one had a time-stamped receipt for liquor at a bar in his pocket. Officials believe that the scene of the crash makes it clear that a high-speed collision took place, and that the “recklessness” of the person behind the wheel “was exacerbated by the consumption of alcohol.” While the toxicology tests are reportedly complete, the results are still unreleased.
The driver hasn’t been named, but investigators now suspect them of Boating Under the Influence and Vessel Homicide. Since they are deceased, the burden will likely fall on their families if charges are pressed. TMZ originally reported that Jose had been partying hard on the night that he passed away, and the Miami Herald reports that friends of the pitcher think it’s likely he was behind the wheel, since he had the most experience and one of the other victims was a recent acquaintance. Our hearts go out to everyone involved in this terrible tragedy.
