We’re going to let you in on a little secret — sometimes, dirty hair is better. Everyone knows it’s actually good for your hair if you skip a wash, but did you know that some hairstyles actually work better on third-day hair? Click ahead to find out how to copy Selena Gomez’s fishtail ponytail on dirty hair.
Whether she’s rocking fringe and textured waves or a sleek updo, Selena Gomez is all around hair goals — she is the face (and hair) behind Pantene, after all. But when Sel tries out a messy braided style like the ponytail fishtail braid she wore a few years back, skipping a wash can actually help make the style look even cooler.
To help us all master the textured look, hairstylist Jason J. Dougherty of Butterfly Studio Salon in NYC gave us a quick how-to for achieving Selena’s look on second (or third!) day hair.
1) To start, Jason says to add more grip to your hair by spraying it with a texturizer like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray.
2) Once you’ve brushed your hair back into a high ponytail, use your fingers to create a little texture at the crown.
3) Create a fishtail braid down the length of the ponytail by separating the hair into two sections. Then take a small piece from the outside of the right section and bring it to the center, crossing it over to the left side. Follow by taking a small piece from the left section and crossing that over to center, and repeat.
4) Once you reach the bottom (this might take awhile), secure the braid with an elastic hair band and use your fingers to gently pull the braid for a looser, more textured finish.
When you do wash your hair, copy Selena and go for a shampoo and conditioner combo that will keep hair hydrated and soft like the singer’s favorite Pantene Intense Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner. Not only does the nourishing formula help to prevent breakage, but it also adds a glossy shine to your hair to make it look even healthier.
HollywoodLifers, will you try this the next time you skip a wash? What’s your dirty hair go-to style?
