It’s Kanye West vs. Jay Z thanks to new, explosive shade that Ye threw at Jay onstage on Oct. 19, and you can bet that neither party is backing down. It’s only fitting that we round up the best beef that the two rappers have had over the years. Brush up on the history, then tell us if this feud takes the cake!
Kanye West, 39, and Jay Z, 45, are at it again, and though it seems serious, we’re here to remind you that Yeezy and Jay have battled it out over the years over a multitude of subjects. From the ongoing Apple/Tidal beef to the disagreements over the making and execution of Watch the Throne, here’s the complete history of every fight the two rappers have had!
First, let’s talk about the controversial collaboration between Jay Z and Coldplay on the 2006 track “Beach Chair”. Kanye claims he had the idea to collab with Coldplay first — he did so on 2007’s “Homecoming” — as he puts it on “Big Brother”: “I told Jay I did a song with Coldplay/Next thing I know he got a song with Coldplay.” So that’s clearly a sore spot for Ye.
Oh, and when Jay held a star-studded “retirement” concert at Madison Square Garden in New York in 2003, not only did he not invite Kanye to perform, but Kanye had to buy tickets to attend. He claimed he was asked to buy two tix, which Jay later disputed, saying in an interview that Kanye had been gifted four…but wanted two more.
The two did kiss and makeup in time to record 2011’s Watch the Throne…but it didn’t last long. Jay and Ye fought over everything from which songs should make the album to how the concerts would go. In short, Kanye wanted the shows to be expensive and extravagant — no surprise there — while Jay just wanted everything to be chill — also not surprising. Jay won.
Fast-forward to July 2016, when the Apple/Tidal “bullsh*t” began. Kanye believed that the Apple Music versus Tidal fight could be solved if Jay and Apple CEO Tim Cook would just call each other up and talk it out. Here’s a recap of Ye’s helpful tweets about the situation:
Of course, Kanye brought that up again in his NSFW rant in Seattle, reiterating that “there will never be a Watch The Throne 2…I wasn’t on the [the album version of ‘Pop Style’] ’cause [Jay Z]. It was some Tidal/Apple bullsh*t”. Look, Kanye feels strongly about this, okay?
That brings us to the heart of the current feud, which is that Kanye is salty that Jay and Beyonce didn’t “visit” him and Kim Kardashian after her gunpoint robbery in Paris. This, according to Kanye, makes Jay a bad friend. “Don’t call me, after the robbery, and say ‘How you feelin’?’ You wanna know how I’m feeling? Come by the house,” Kanye complained. “Bring the kids by the house, like we brothers…Our kids ain’t never even played together,” he added. Well, that just tugs at our heartstrings.
