Stefan and Caroline’s relationship is going to get even more complicated over the course of the final season of ‘The Vampire Diaries.’ Paul Wesley revealed in a new interview that Steroline starts off ‘strong,’ but it only goes downhill from there.
“Stefan and Caroline start off pretty strong … and then it kind of spins out of control,” Paul Wesley, 34, told our sister site TVLine. “It can get dark for a second. But the ultimate thing is, ‘Will they end up together?’ And that I actually don’t know.”
Candice King, 29, admitted that Steroline’s “relationship will definitely be tested” in the final season. “They have to balance some pretty adult things,” she noted. She said that Stefan will “always choose his brother first,” so that will really complicate things for Steroline.
The final season of The Vampire Diaries will consist of 16 episodes. There’s no official word yet if Nina Dobrev, 27, will return as Elena Gilbert, but she did make a promise to showrunner Julie Plec.
The first episode of the final season is titled “Hello Brother,” an homage to the first words Damon uttered to Stefan in the show’s pilot. The synopsis of the season 8 premiere reads:
“Months after Damon and Enzo mysteriously vanished from the Armory vault, Stefan tirelessly pushes forward with their search, while Bonnie struggles holding onto hope that they will be found. Meanwhile, a dangerous encounter with an unexpected visitor leaves Caroline and Alaric fearing that someone – or something – may be targeting their family. Finally, after following some mysterious clues, Stefan realizes that whatever has a hold of his brother may have a more damaging grip over him than he could have ever imagined.”
The Vampire Diaries final season will premiere Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
