‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ ‘Virgin’s’ Guide: Audience Participation Tips & Traditions

Some people have been watching ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ at midnight viewings for 40 years, but you may be watching for the first time when the remake premieres on October 20! One of the best parts about seeing the cult film is audience participation, and you can still do it at home! Click through for the traditions you need to know!

The fun part about The Rocky Horror Picture Show is that theaters seems to have its own traditions when it comes to callbacks. There are always quintessential lines that every audience says, no matter where they are. You need to know the following if you want to make your audience participation experience authentic, even if you’re watching by yourself! Note that this gets a little NSFW:

First, every time Brad Majors and Janet Weiss are introduced to someone, and their names are said, you have to yell “A**HOLE! and “SLUT!” respectively. During the intro song, “Science Fiction Double Feature”, at the line “See androids fighting,” the audience always calls out “and f**king, and sucking” before they say Brad and Janet.

During the drawn-out pause when Frank says “Antici……pation” during “Sweet Transvestite,” you must yell “Say it!” In the same song, when Frank says about Rocky, “And he’s good for relieving my…tension,” yell “sexual!” in the pause. There’s so much more to say, but it varies between audiences. Try out this version here if you dare!

Doing the Time Warp is essential, as well, but it’s easy because they just tell you how to do the dance in the song! You’re set! Stock up on these props, too! Some of these are messy, so you may want to skip if you don’t want to clean up a mess after the movie:

RICE: Throw  rice at Ralph Hapschatt and Betty Munroe’s wedding.

NEWSPAPERS & WATER GUNS: When Brad and Janet are caught in the rain, fire squirt guns in the air while you hold a newspaper over your head, just like Janet does.

LIGHTERS: During the “There’s a Light” verse of “Over at the Frankenstein Place”, wave a lighter or candle over your head. Be safe with where you’re pointing it! A flashlight will do just fine, too.

RUBBER GLOVES: While Frank is explaining how he created Rocky, he snaps his pair of rubber gloves. You’ll be wearing a pair, too, and snapping the gloves in sync with Frank!

NOISEMAKERS: After that same speech, the Transylvanians cheer and blow noisemakers. Blow yours, too!

TOILET PAPER: When Dr. Scott shows up, and Brad exclaims “Great Scott!” you’re going to throw a roll of toilet paper in the air. Generally, it’s thrown down the theater toward the movie screen, but you probably won’t have very much room between you and the TV to do this!

PARTY HATS: When the guests are having dinner, put on a party hat.

BELL: During the song “Planet Schmanet Janet”, ring your bell after Frank sings “Do you hear a bell ring?”
