Though both Manchester City and Barcelona played the full 90+ minutes of the game, the Sky Blues might have well given up after Lionel, 29, scored his first point of the game at the 17th minute, according to Fox Sports. Messi floated by Man City’s Nicolas Otamendi, 28, and that was the opportunity the Barca superstar needed.
It wouldn’t be until the 61st minute that Messi would find the goal again. After getting the assist from Andres Iniesta, 32, Lionel booted the shot deep into the bottom right corner, per ESPN. Barcelona was now up 2-0 and Man City’s Champions League dreams were turning into nightmares.
With that shot, Lionel was tied with Real Madrid legend Raul, 39, for the most all-time Champions League goals scored at home. It didn’t take long. At minute 69, Lionel got the assist from Luis Suarez, 29, and the Trident had given Messi is record-setting goal. At 50, he now leads the most UCL points scored at home, but his archrival Cristiano Ronaldo, 31, is close behind at 48. Which one of these men will end the Champions League season as the record holder?
With this win, Barcelona skyrockets to the top of Group C table with 9 points. Man City is behind at 4, but it’s quite a distance between first and second place. The Sky Blues will have a chance to recover from this humiliation when they play Barca in the rematch at Manchester’s home ground of Etihad Stadium. Will Messi pull off another hat trick in front of Man City’s fans? That would be quite embarrassing.
