Normal pre-debate behavior calls for presidential spouses to shake hands, but Melania Trump and Bill Clinton may change things up at the final debate on October 19! Will Melania and Bill stick to tradition, or will they refuse to shake hands?
The intensity and animosity of the 2016 presidential race has destroyed one of the campaign’s most benign traditions. Typically, opposing family members cross paths across the debate stage and shake each other’s hands, providing a moment of solidarity and peace before their loved ones duke it onstage. But that may not be the case anymore.
In previous debates, former President Bill Clinton and Melania Trump, along with their respective children, have shaken hands before taking their seats and watching Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump debate. But after Donald invited three women who once accused Bill of sexual assault in the 90s to the October 9 debate, the Clinton campaign is allegedly ending the tradition. Donald’s plan was to parade the women across the stage with his family, forcing them to come face-to-face with Bill, and therefore forcing him to shake their hands; the Commission on Presidential Debates did not allow this to happen.
The Clinton campaign allegedly has gained approval for candidates’ families to enter the debate hall differently at the event on October 19, according to anonymous sources who spoke to the New York Times. Rather than crossing the hall, the families will reportedly enter on the sides where they’re seated, eliminating the opportunity to shake hands. This way, if Donald cooks up a plan to humiliate Bill again, it can’t happen. This debate may be located in Las Vegas, but it’s going to be icy!
This may prove useful, as Donald has invited President Obama‘s half-brother, Malik Obama, to the debate. Malik is an outspoken opponent of his brother’s policies, and supports Donald for president. Malik is from Kenya, though, and cannot vote in the election. His tactic is to unnerve Hillary with Malik in the audience. But now, Bill allegedly at least won’t be shaking his hand.
