What happens when you turn a murder drama into a reality show? Well, ‘Return To Roanoke: Three Days In Hell.’ Allow me to (attempt to) explain the latest ‘American Horror Story’ twist.
First thing’s first: the first six episodes of AHS are in the past; that was My Roanoke Nightmare, a successful show created by Sydney (Cheyenne Jackson). Now he’s filming the sequel, a follow up series, Return to Roanoke: Three Days In Hell, this time using the real people, not the actors. Okay, maybe both. And yes, they’d be filming during the blood moon. Syd now owned the house, and lined it with cameras.
So, who returned to the house for filming? First up was Shelby (Lily Rabe) who returned to the house in an effort to fix her marriage to Matt (André Holland) — they were now separated after she had a fling with Dominic Banks (Cuba Gooding Jr.), the actor who played Matt. Syd promised Shelby Dominic wouldn’t be there . . . but naturally he booked him.
Matt’s sister Lee Harris (Adina Porter) also joined to prove to the world she didn’t kill her husband; naturally, Syd hoped she’d admit it. The actress who played her, now an alcoholic, came along too because why not (Angela Bassett, who also directed the episode)? One star who wouldn’t be included in the follow up series? Agnes Mary Winstead (Kathy Bates), the actress who played The Butcher. She actually became obsessed with the role and was charged with assault when she basically turned into her. So he slapped her with a restraining order from the set. Right.
Now onto everyone’s favorites. Audrey Tindall (Sarah Paulson) was the actress who played Shelby, and was now married Rory, the actor who played Edward Mott (Evan Peters)! They fell in love on set, because duh, and were head over heels in love.
And Filming Begins
Naturally, the weird things began on set. A chain of pigs were found during prep, and a crew member decapitated himself with a chainsaw just hours before the cast arrived. That led Syd’s co-producer to quit on the spot, drive away… and be murdered by a pigman. Slowly but surely, the cast began to figure out it was all real.
The noises began outside; someone stalked Audrey while she was in the shower; and when Rory went up to save her, he was murdered by two girls. And Matt knew — the R in MURDER appeared. But the real twist? A title card revealed that every person in the house died during filming, except one… and we’re actually seeing unused footage.
Did you love the twist?
