To be eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a band or artist must have released their first single or album 25 years prior to the nomination — so this was the first year that Tupac Shakur became eligible, and he made the list!
Here’s the full list of nominees for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017:
Electric Light Orchestra
J. Geils Band
Bad Brains, Depeche Mode, Electric Light Orchestra, Jane’s Addiction, Joan Baez, Journey, Pearl Jam, Steppenwolf, and Tupac are all first year nominees! Ballots will be sent out to more than 800 members of the music industry to vote, and fans can vote on their website from Oct. 18 to Dec. 5. The inductees will be announced in December, and the induction ceremony will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in April 2017; it will be broadcasted by HBO.
For the first time this year, the Hall of Fame revealed that individual members of each band will also be honored, in addition to the band as a whole. Only Pearl Jam’s current drummer Matt Cameron and founding member Dave Krusen will be inducted; for Electric Light Orchestra just Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, Bev Bevan and Richard Tandy made it; Journey’s full lineup made the list, along with founding member, Gregg Rolie.
That being said, we can assume (and hope) Journey will reunite with Steve Perry, Yes will reunite with Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Trevor Rabin, Tony Kaye and Rick Wakeman, and Jane’s Addiction with bassist Eric Avery.
Last year, N.W.A., Steve Miller, Deep Purple and Chicago were all inducted into the Hall of Fame.
