Ryan Lochte is no longer shying away from his Rio robbery scandal and is officially opening up about how it affected him in the weeks after, calling it his ‘lowest low.’ Get the full scoop on how Ryan got through it all, and how he hopes to keep going, right here!
“I was at my lowest low. The darkest place of my life,” Ryan Lochte, 32, told New York Magazine, referring to the fallout from the fabrication he told of being robbed at gunpoint at a gas station in Rio during the 2016 Olympic Games. He told the magazine that he would stay in his house in North Carolina for days on end, afraid that he would have awkward encounters and have to deal with reporters. And during this time, he began to lose endorsement after endorsement, however, Dancing With The Stars was still willing to take him in. But, Ryan almost didn’t take the opportunity!
“I didn’t want to put myself out there just yet,” he told the magazine. “I was scared to show my face in public.” Thankfully for both him and DWTS viewers, he took the plunge. “If I wasn’t on this show, I don’t know what I would have done. This has really gotten me out of the dark hole.” Ryan did admit that the show is “like a full-time job,” but even still he has some more free time to spend how he chooses nowadays. “It’s weird to have this free time. But it’s cool because I actually get to do stuff I couldn’t do before.” Like getting his very first credit card. We won’t ask how Ryan made it this long without some plastic, but that’s a big step!
However, an even bigger step was planning his proposal to his girlfriend Kayla Rae Reid. And now that she’s said yes, he’s totally on board to PLAN EVERYTHING with her. “I want to pick out the cake, the flowers, all of it.” And as for getting back to the Olympics? “When I’m feeling like I want to get back in the water, I will get back in the water. Right now, I just want to actually take a deep breath and enjoy life.” We get it Ryan, we get it.
