Do we smell a little shade? Zayn Malik may have taken a subtle jab at his former boy band One Direction when he revealed what subject he was able to sing about after he left the group. Get the scoop!
Let’s talk about sex! Well, at least that’s what Zayn Malik, 23, wanted to sing about. According to the new solo artist, he couldn’t really go there with his music when he was apart of the international sensation, One Direction. In an excerpt from his highly anticipated autobiography, Zayn kind of dissed his former boy group while explaining why he was relieved to have started a solo career of his own.
“Every lyric I’ve ever written has a story behind it,” Zayn said, referring to his No. 1, debut single, “Pillowtalk.” “All the hard work that went into the creation of ‘Pillowtalk’ was worthwhile because, as soon as it was finished, I intuitively felt I was on the right path… It was a sick cut, nailing the exact sound I wanted to capture in my music.”
Speaking of the right path, Zayn admitted that he was most happy with the new subject matter that he could cover in his own music. “I was also able to sing about a subject that I hadn’t really been able to go near while I was in One Direction: sex,” Zayn wrote in his new book. Whoa, that definitely sounds like a little shade to us!
While it may seem like a low blow to all the true Directioners out there, Zayn may be telling the truth. In contrast to his racy tracks, 1D kept it pretty PG and tween friendly in their music. Even Niall Horan, 23, who recently debuted his first single as a solo artist, “This Town,” has opted for more intimate content than he was ever allowed before.
So, the verdict is still out on whether Zayn was actually throwing shade or not, but there’s more tea where that came from! Zayn’s autobiography, simply titled after his first name, is set to release Nov. 1. In addition to personal photographs and drawings from the pop turned R&B singer, the star will also discuss his childhood, becoming a phenomenon with 1D, and starting his solo career. We can’t wait!
HollywoodLifers, what do you think of Zayn’s autobiography excerpt. Do you think he was throwing shade toward One Direction, or just being honest?
