Did we hear that correctly? Donald Trump repeatedly called Marlee Matlin (who’s deaf) ‘retarded’ during her time on ‘The Apprentice,’ and now, she’s slamming the Republican nominee for using such an aberrant term. Read her statement right here.
It is NEVER OK to call someone “retarded” — but Donald Trump, 70, did it anyway because a deaf contestant signed up for his show. Marlee Matlin, 51, joined The Apprentice in 2011, on which she claims Donald repeatedly called her the R-word, according to the Huffington Post. Not only is that term inappropriate, it could also be offensive to people who are physically or mentally challenged. Taking a stand against his hurtful language, Marlee issued a statement on Oct. 14 that read, “The term is abhorrent and should never be used. The fact that we are talking about this during a very important moment in history has upset me deeply.”
One of the biggest issues people seem to have with Donald being eligible for President is the fact that he’s a discriminatory and hateful person. The business mogul has been VERY vocal about his negative thoughts towards Muslims (and his plans to kick them out of the U.S), and now he’s attacking people with disabilities. Unsurprisingly, this isn’t the first time Donald has called someone the R-word. During a 2014 Howard Stern interview, the father-of-five called his golf instructor “mentally retarded.” Not even his GOLF INSTRUCTOR is safe!
Even though Marlee technically can’t hear, her deafness doesn’t appear to be holding her back whatsoever! The praised actress has not one, but TWO impressive awards under her belt! Marlee won a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for her role in Children Of A Lesser God. She hasn’t done much TV work since, with her latest on-screen appearance being on The Apprentice in 2011, which surely must be an experience she wishes to forget.
