You think the All-Star game would be a goal for any baseball player — but when Ginny got a surprise nomination, one person who isn’t pleased is her mother who was looking forward to a baseball-free weekend with her in San Diego.
I think it’s best to tell you about the past first: Ginny’s relationship with her parents. Ginny and her mom were close, until her father made her chose between baseball and well, everything else. Her mom told her that no matter what, she could change her mind anytime. However, when she did come home in the middle of the school day to tell her mom she wanted to be a girl like the rest of her classmates, she found her mother in the arms with another man, named Kevin.
Cut to present, and Ginny’s mother had planned a visit, but unfortunately after Mike Lawson got hurt, she was called up to rep the Padres during the All Star game — meaning she didn’t have much time to spend with her mom. But it was Ginny who was surprised: her mother invited her new boyfriend, Kevin, too. She told Ginny they’d been dating for a year. That resulted in quite the awkward dinner — Mike and Amelia were still hiding their relationship, and Kevin asked Mike for tickets to the All-Star game. Naturally, Ginny went off when he brought up how great of a job her father did. And her mother and him did not show up at the All-Star game.
As for Mike Lawson, his back was just getting worse, so much so that Amelia had convinced him to do a run-through with Fox News as a commentator. He surprised himself but not being great at it, being far too analytical. However, when he went live he pulled it together, just in time to defend Ginny after she didn’t do so well in the All-Star game. He briefly froze up before revealing that she was much stronger than he was.
They also delivered him breaking news on the live broadcast: the Padres had just drafted a huge, brand new catcher, who Oscar had flown across the country to try and get, even though he had a much bigger offer from the Yankees. His only instruction: he wouldn’t sit behind Lawson. Lawson’s response: he’s not taking my place. Following the game, Ginny and Mike bonded, once again, on the phone chatting like they’d been friends for life. I’m going to be honest, I’m shipping the friendship between them. Are you?
