No hiding here! Miley Cyrus opened up about being pansexual in an Oct. 11 interview, revealing that her struggles with her own identity are what led to her being such a passionate activist for the LGBTQ community. Find out why Miley struggled with her sexual orientation when she was younger, and how she found a middle ground!
She’s an open book. Miley Cyrus, 23, got super personal in Variety‘s Power of Women issue, admitting that she was confused about her sexual orientation while growing up. “I never related to loving being a girl. And then, being a boy didn’t sound fun to me. I think the LGBTQ alphabet could continue forever. But there’s a ‘P’ that should happen, for ‘pansexual’,” Miley revealed. Wow — we’re so surprised to hear all this from the former Hannah Montana star, but we love how true to herself she is!
The Voice judge also divulged that her first relationship was with a woman. “My whole life, I didn’t understand my own gender and my own sexuality,” she told the magazine. “I always hated the word ‘bisexual,’ because that’s even putting me in a box. I don’t ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl. My eyes started opening in the fifth or sixth grade. My first relationship in my life was with a chick.”
Miley also admitted that she didn’t realize how connected she was to the LGBTQ community until she actually met others who shared her views of human sexuality. “I went to the LGBTQ center here in L.A., and I started hearing these stories,” she said. “I saw one human in particular who didn’t identify as male or female. And I related to that person more than I related to anyone in my life. Even though I may seem very different, people may not see me as neutral as I feel. But I feel very neutral. Once I understood my gender more, which was unassigned, then I understood my sexuality more. I was like, ‘Oh—that’s why I don’t feel straight and I don’t feel gay. It’s because I’m not.'”
These days, there’s one thing that Miley is very clear about, and that’s how happy and in love she is with her fiancee Liam Hemsworth, 26. As HollywoodLife.com EXCLUSIVELY told you on Sept. 6, the two are “both in a really great space together right now and are really in love.” We’re just anxiously counting down until the big wedding day!
