It’s my favorite episode of the season — most memorable year night on ‘Dancing With The Stars!’ Read our week five recap — and get ready to cry!
First up, Maureen McCormick and Artem Chigvintsev. Her most memorable year was 1985, when she married her husband. She said he saved her from a 5 year cocaine addiction! They danced the Foxtrot to “From the Ground Up” by Dan + Shay. Julianne Hough told her: “You are graceful, you feel right at home. This was one of your best dances.” Bruno Tonioli said it was pretty. Carrie Ann Inaba said she was “a slow learner but she’s learning.” Um, okay. They got a 24!
Calvin Johnson Jr. and Lindsay Arnold danced Jazz to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. His year was 2012, when he broke Jerry Rice‘s record of receiving yards in the NFL. Jerry even made a cameo in the dance! Bruno said: “You have natural ease, smooth charm, you really are a dancer!” Carrie Ann said he needs to work on musicality a little bit. Julianne said they are “magic” together. They got a 24!
Next, Jana Kramer and Gleb Savchenko danced Contemporary to “In My Daughter’s Eyes” by Martina McBride. It was emotional — her year was 2016, when she had her daughter Jolie Rae, 1. She also spoke about her previous marriage — her ex-husband Michael Gambino was arrested for trying to kill her. “It was a breakthrough tonight for you. You finally danced with beauty,” Carrie Ann said. Julianne started crying and said: “One word. Perseverance.” Bruno said she was focused, committed, and fearless. They got a 26!
Ryan Lochte & Cheryl Burke danced Contemporary to “A Song for You” by Leon Russell. His most memorable year was 2008, when he won his first individual Olympic gold medal. He dedicated his performance to his mom. Julianne said she was “really impressed.” Bruno said it was his most honest performance to date. Carrie Ann said she saw his vulnerability, and she loved it. They got a 24.
Next, Laurie Hernandez and Valentin Chmerkovskiy danced a Paso Doblé to “Rise” by Katy Perry. Her most memorable year was 2016, when she won gold at the Rio Olympics! Bruno said, “You are an incredible dancer but tonight you messed it up.” Carrie Ann said the beginning of the dance didn’t feel authentic. Julianne said, “I disagree! I thought it was fantastic!” They got a 25!
Marilu Henner and Derek Hough did a Viennese Waltz to “Surprise Yourself” by Jack Garratt. Marilu’s most memorable year was 1978, when she lost her mother but then landed her life-changing role in Taxi. “Instead of trying to be great, you just were great. You are great,” Carrie Ann said. Julianne was in tears because she said, “I know how much you want this.” Bruno said it was brilliant. They got a 27, the highest score of the night!
Amber Rose and Maksim Chmerkovskiy danced a Samba to “Woman Up” by Meghan Trainor. It was for the year 2013, when she had her son Sebastian, 4. “I loved the costume, I loved the concept, I loved the content,” Julianne said. Carrie Ann said she “filled the room. You were incredible, Amber.” They got a 24!
James Hinchcliffe and Sharna Burgess danced the Tango to “The Right Time” by Yves V featuring Mike James. James spoke about 2015, when he was in a horrible car accident. He slammed into the wall at around 225 miles per hour. Just 18 months ago, he had a huge piece of car literally going through his body! His doctor said the survival rate of an injury like this is ZERO — but James survived! Their dance was my favorite of the night! “That is how you attack a tango! Super slick, super sharp, amazing control,” Bruno said. Carrie Ann said he is the one to beat! Julianne said his frame is the best she has seen on the show! They got a 29 out of 30 — amazing!
Finally, Terra Jolé and Sasha Farber did a Contemporary routine to “Stand by Me” by Florence + The Machine. Her most memorable year was 2013, when her father passed away. She was on tour with Miley Cyrus at the time, and wasn’t home with him. “You are living the dream that you were born to. Your dad was right,” Carrie Ann said. Julianne said, “Everyone watching believes in you tonight.” They got a 27!
