‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star Sara Ramirez has come out as queer and bisexual through an emotional speech and Instagram post on October 8. Click through to read her empowering, heartfelt words!
Sara Ramirez played Dr. Callie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy for 10 years, and now, after leaving the show, she’s revealed that it wasn’t just her character who’s bisexual. Sara came out while speaking at the True Colors: 40 to None Summit in Los Angeles on October 8, an event that addresses LGBT youth homelessness. She shared with the audience that she too is a queer and bisexual woman. It was a remarkable speech, and she later shared the transcript on Instagram so her followers could know what she shared, as well.
“So many of our youth experiencing homelessness are youth whose lives touch on many intersections—whether they be gender identity, gender expression, race, class, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status,” she wrote. “And, because of the intersections that exist in my own life: Woman, multi-racial woman, woman of color, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant, and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican and Irish sides, I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youth’s voices to be heard, and that support our youth in owning their own complex narratives so that we can show up for them in the ways they need us to.”

What a beautiful statement! Sara has never spoken openly about her sexuality before, but has said in the past that it would often come into question because Callie was bisexual on Grey’s Anatomy. She also revealed during a 2011 interview with Latina that she would get hate mail because her character was in a serious relationship with another woman, Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw).
