Ronaldo sat out the opening match of Group B with a knee injury that he suffered in the Euro 2016 tournament, according Sky Sports. Even with Ronaldo, Portugal would have struggled against Switzerland, but with Cristiano on the bench, the Portuguese powerhouses plummeted, falling 2-0 to the Swiss soccer superstars.
This game might be the first time that Ronaldo runs wild after his injury. He was subbed out in the last 20 minutes of Real Madrid’s 2-2 draw against Las Palmas in La Liga. Seems coach Zinedine Zidane, 44, wasn’t willing to overexert his star player, but Zinedine’s not in charge of this match. Fernando Santos, 61, is calling the shots and he’s glad to have Ronaldo on board.
“The squad is stronger because it has Cristiano, but mostly because the other players have more minutes, longer work, more training under their belts,” he said ahead of the match, per ESPN. “The spirit we showed in the Euro is our trademark and we must keep that. We have to leave behind the European champions ‘party’ mode, that cannot happen again.” Will it happen again, leaving Portugal 0-2 and closer to getting eliminated? Probably not, as Ronaldo’s return is expected to resurrect his team’s World Cup hopes.
Who do you think is going to win this game, HollywoodLifers? Will Portugal overpower Andorra or will the Tricolors trump Cristiano’s crew?
