Congratulations are in order for Juan Manuel Santos because he is the winner of the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize! The President of Colombia was given the honor for his valiant efforts in ending the country’s civil war, which has spanned five decades.
The entire world was looking towards Oslo, Norway on Oct. 7, as Kaci Kullmann Five, 65, the chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the winner of the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize. And now we have a winner — Juan Manuel Santos, the President of Colombia!
During his term, Juan has put forth a dedicated effort to ending Colombia’s five-decade civil war, which has killed more than 200,000 people. And even though voters in Colombia rejected Juan’s peace deal just days ago, the Norwegian Nobel Committee is still confident that civilians have the “desire for peace,” and that a solution is significantly closer. The committee also said that the award is a “tribute to the Colombian people who, despite great hardships and abuses, have not given up hope of a just peace, and to all the parties who have contributed to the peace process.”
Predicting who’s going to win the Nobel Peace Prize is notoriously difficult, according to the BBC. The secrecy surrounding the nominees is unbelievable. The names of those even nominated are kept under wraps for 50 years. Plus, in 2016, there were 376 eligible candidates (which included 228 individuals and 148 organizations.)
Even though the nominee short list was kept a secret, there were some proposed front-runners. Svetlana Gannushkina, 74, the Russian human rights activist that worked to help more than 50,000 migrants and refugees since 1990, was a heavy favorite. Syria Civil Defense, also known as Syria’s “White Helmets,” were also considered possible winners, as they’re a group of volunteers who rush to bomb sites in Syria to rescue victims from the rubble and possible follow-up air strikes.
But, in the end, only one winner could be named — and Juan was the guy!
