Even before Hurricane Matthew began to hit the Atlantic coast of the United States, it left some devastating affects in its path after hitting the Caribbean. See pics of the destruction right here.
Haiti was the first country to really get hit by Hurricane Matthew as it ripped through the Caribbean, with Cuba and the Dominican Republic also being impacted. As the death toll continued to rise and reached more than 100 on Oct. 6, new photos surfaced of the neighborhoods that were wiped out by the Category 3 storm. Some homes had their roof torn right off while others were completely flattened, leaving around 350,000 people in need of help. As if these pictures aren’t shocking enough, the destruction could be even worse once Hurricane Matthew hits the U.S. coast. The storm has been classified as a Category 4 hurricane (the second-highest classification) as it makes its way to Florida, and Gov. Rick Scott has issued a State of Emergency for the entire state in preparation for what’s about to strike. Looking at the rubble that the hurricane has caused in the countries it has already hit, we can only imagine what’s going through the minds of people who are in the storm’s path.
In fact, Georgia and South Carolina’s governors have also warned residents along the coast that it’s not safe to stay there, and are urging people to evacuate as soon as possible. It’s unclear what kind of destruction could occur in the U.S., but if it’s anything like what happened in the Caribbean, there could be millions left homeless or at least in need of help by the time the storm is finally over. Our hearts are with those who have already been affected by Hurricane Matthew and hope everyone stays safe amidst this devastating storm.
