While Mike Pence went tough on Russia during the vice presidential debate on October 4, he didn’t shy away from talking highly of their president, Vladimir Putin. In fact, he called him a better leader than Barack Obama! What?
Vice presidential candidate Mike Pence decided to take a harder approach on Russia during the VP debate than has ever been displayed in his running mate’s campaign throughout the 2016 election. Considering Donald Trump‘s friendly relationship with Russian president Vladimir Putin, it was a bit of a shock to hear him speak definitively about the United States’ need to deal with the county.
Mike argued that the Russian invasions of neighboring countries needed to be met with “American strength,” and apparently, that’s just not something we have nowadays. According to Mike, President Barack Obama isn’t a strong leader, but you know who is? Vladimir Putin. Wait, what?
Yeah, Tim was having none of that. He called out Mike for his “odd claim,” and slammed his “shadowy connections with pro-Putin forces.” As Tim pointed out, Mike’s said this before, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on September 8: “I think it’s inarguable that Vladimir Putin has been a stronger leader in his country than Barack Obama has been in this country. And that’s going to change the day that Donald Trump becomes president of the United States of America.”
Caught! Mike couldn’t really recover from that, and Tim drove the point home even harder. “Vladimir Putin’s run his economy into the ground, he persecutes LGBT folks and journalists. If you don’t know the difference between dictatorship and leadership, then you have got to go back to a fifth-grade civics class.”
