Ouch! Ryan Lochte is bashing his Rio Olympics teammate Michael Phelps for totally turning his back on him after his embarrassing lie about being robbed at gunpoint during the games. Keep reading for how Ryan claims that Michael completely abandoned him as a result of all of the drama surrounding it.
“I think he texted me back saying, ‘Yeah, sure. I’m here to help,’ or something like that,” Ryan, 32, tells USA Today, saying that he reached out for Michael’s support and got the cold shoulder. “But he didn’t call me. I was like, ‘Hey, can you please call me? Let me know, I need help.’ That never really happened.” How sad! Ryan and Michael, 31, have been teammates for years and it obviously hurt him that the greatest all-time Olympian turned his back on Ryan in his biggest time of need.
“I figured it could have been like his people saying, ‘Don’t associate with (Lochte) right now. Lay low,’” Ryan theorized. “It could be anything.” Michael smartly stayed in his hotel with his fiancée and son while Ryan and other teammates hit the town partying after their swimming events finally ended in Rio. After a drunken night of clubbing, Ryan claimed that he and his pals were robbed at gunpoint, which he later admitted was made up after Brazilian officials questioned his story. It got him in so much hot water that he’s now on a 10-month suspension by the U.S. Olympic Committee and U.S. Swimming. But hey, he’s making the best of it by attempting to be a ballroom dancer on Dancing With The Stars.
But it’s not all bad blood between Ryan and Michael, as he knows that his teammate has a lot more going on in his life than helping Ryan deal with his drama. “He’s busy. He has his own life. He has a kid. So it’s gotta be hard, you know?”
“We’re close, but not like close-close,’’ he adds. “I could go hang out with him if I wanted to and have like a conversation easily, or we could go get a bite to eat or something like that. But we don’t.”
HollywoodLifers, do you think it was wrong for Michael to turn his back on Ryan?
