Betty Shelby has officially been charged with first-degree manslaughter after shooting Terence Crutcher in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Find out more about the cop who could be going to jail for killing an unarmed black man right here.
1. She was actually on her way to another call when she encountered Terence.
Betty and her team were headed to an unrelated domestic violence call on Sept. 16 when they discovered Terence‘s car in the middle of the street. According to his family, his car had broken down, but Betty’s attorney says that when approached by police he began acting strange.
2. Betty was in “fear for her life” after pulling Terence over.
Her attorney also claimed that she thought he was going to pull out a weapon after not responding to police commands. She then opened fire on Terence, which ended up being fatal.
3. The charges say she “reacted unreasonably” to Terence’s actions.
The affidavit declares that Betty, who has been with the Tulsa police since 2011, escalated the situation from her unreasonable reaction, “becoming emotionally involved to the point that she over reacted.” Investigation proved that there was no weapon in Terence’s car, and there’s even video footage of the whole incident — both of which definitely didn’t help her case.
4. She’s one of the only cops who has been charged for a deadly shooting in 2016.
This year alone, there have been 790 people killed by police, many of whom were unarmed just like Terence. Several of the officers who have committed these killings have gone to trial, but none of them have received jail time.
5. She could face up to four years in prison.
Although Betty has been charged with first-degree manslaughter, she has yet to be convicted. If she is found guilty of the charge, she may be locked up for as long as four years.
