After getting walloped by Europe (3-0) and creamed by Canada (4-2), the United States was mathematically eliminated from advancing to the Knockout stage of the World Cup. The Czech Republic didn’t fair better, as they were obliterated at the start of the tournament, losing 6-0 to Canada. They failed to get past Europe, losing 3-2 in overtime.

What happened, Team USA? Just a dud against Team Europe,” said Stanley Cup champion Patrick Kane, 27, per Yahoo. “You can probably chalk that one up as we weren’t ready to play, weren’t ready to start the tournament on time.” Clearly, something wasn’t working and the squad is set to head back home after this one last game with the Czechs.

Though, there’s one person who thinks the Americans were doomed from the start: Pittsburgh Penguins’ Phil Kessel, 28. Phil was left off the American team, per The New York Times, and he threw some harsh shade while the Canadians were demolishing the USA. “Just sitting around the house tonight [with] my dog,” Phil tweeted. “Felt like I should be doing something important, but couldn’t put my finger on it.”

Dang. That was colder than the ice the USA was skating on. Well, if there’s any consolation, it’s that Patrick Kane and rest of the USA can now get a jump start on practicing for the 2016 NHL Season.
