Obesity, body image and self esteem are hot topics in our society, and the new Miss America, Savvy Shields, is making it her mission to teach people how to live a healthy lifestyle — including examples from her own personal challenges.
HollywoodLife.com spoke exclusively to the newly crowned Miss America, Savvy Shields, 21, on the top of the Empire State Building on Sept. 14.
She told us at the time about her platform: “Mine is Eat Better, Live Better. Hopefully, with my new title, I can be a voice and encourage and enable healthier lifestyles and teach people that healthy eating isn’t that scary or hard. There are some negative connotations with it, but with my life experience and living by example, I can hopefully encourage other people to do so.”
She continued, explaining more about how little changes can add up to big results. “I grew up in a super healthy home and I never thought anything of it. It wasn’t until I got to college and the world of free food and pizza all the time happened! The freshman 50 became way too real,” she told us. “It was that moment that I decided to take charge of my health. It was a weight issue, but for me it was also a quality of life issue. I was getting sick and tired of being sick and tired. I had loss of concentration, I was fatigued all the time with mental and emotional stress and it was the quality of life I was living that I wanted to change. I want to teach people about the connection between what you’re eating and what you’re feeling and realizing that food does matter. You can change your life drastically.”
Savvy told us she is already so grateful for the celebrity platform she has been given! “Being Miss America gives you the choice to be a voice,” Savvy told us. “It gives you an opportunity to be a spokesperson for so many people who don’t get that opportunity. It’s what I’ve wanted my whole entire life. Hopefully, I can be that celebrity and that role model for people who don’t get that opportunity and I can change some lives!”
