After four long months, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ finally returned, and on the Season 13 premiere Sept. 22, Andrew landed in the hospital. Bailey tried figuring out what happened, while Meredith juggled huge secrets that affected her relationships with both Maggie and Alex. Read our recap here!
The Season 13 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy picked up right where last season left off. At Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen’s (Kevin McKidd) wedding reception, Riggs kept trying to hit on Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), but a call from the hospital — where Andrew showed up bruised and battered — put a stop to that immediately.
While Richard (James Pickens, Jr.) consoled an emotional Jo (Camilla Luddington), Meredith rushed to the hospital, where she demanded answers from Alex. He told her what happened, but when he asked if she was going to report him to Bailey, Meredith told him to say his hand was battered because he slipped in the rain (Bad move, Meredith!). So not only did Meredith put herself in a tough position, but she was also forced to lie to Maggie later when she asked what happened to Andrew. This, of course, later bites her in the ass.
When Ben (Jason George) later confronted Alex about his bruised fist, Alex said he slipped in the rain. And when Ben pressed harder, suggesting he knew what really happened, Alex insisted nothing did. Meanwhile, Meredith kept a close eye on Andrew’s CT scans as a way to protect Alex.
Then, Jo showed up to the hospital and tried explaining to Alex what really happened, but before he let her speak, he pretty much ripped her a new one, saying she’s incapable of allowing love into her life because of the way she was raised. That, of course, led her to tears, leaving her unable to actually explain why Andrew ended up on top of her in bed. Alex stormed off and nothing was resolved.
Meredith eventually found out what REALLY happened, when Stephanie filled her in on Jo’s memory of what transpired, and then she relayed this information to Alex. Unsurprisingly, they both started freaking out after realizing Alex attacked Andrew for no good reason. While Meredith suggested Alex go talk to Bailey, he insisted on talking to Deluca first.
Unfortunately, when Alex tried talking to Andrew, Andrew totally freaked out and called security. And after mustering up enough courage, Meredith ended up doing something she never wanted to do — she told Bailey that Alex was the one who beat up Andrew.
Obviously, Bailey then rushed to find Alex, but he had already turned himself in to the police. They arrested him for aggravated assault, and he was then escorted out of the hospital in handcuffs. Maggie was pretty pissed that Meredith lied to her, and Bailey was upset Ben didn’t say anything to her earlier.
Back at home, Maggie told Meredith to never to lie to her again, and she agreed. Yet, she still refrained from telling Maggie about her relationship with Riggs. Instead, when Riggs showed up at Meredith’s house, she told him she doesn’t have feelings for him, so they should drop what they had going on. (Obviously, she really does have feelings for him, but it saved her from telling Maggie the truth.)
Finally, Meredith went to visit Alex in jail, and while she tried comforting him, he predicted he’ll never step foot in the hospital again. (We seriously hope this isn’t!)
