Daniel Radcliffe isn’t afraid to diss his own industry! The actor called out Hollywood for being undeniably racist in a new interview, declaring how it’s ‘lagging behind’ other industries. See what Daniel had to say right here!
When Daniel appeared on BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire talk show on Sept. 20, he was asked about everything from reprising Harry Potter to his opinion on Donald Trump. And when the host asked the 27-year-old actor’s thoughts on the controversy over whether Hollywood is racist, he had no issue completely speaking his mind.
“I mean, yes. I think it’s pretty undeniable,” he told Victoria. “We like to think of ourselves as a very, very progressive industry, but we sort of have been lagging behind in all kind of areas that have been very well documented.”
The film Daniel was promoting in his interview, Imperium, revolves around Daniel’s character who is an FBI agent that goes undercover to take down a white supremacy group, which is likely what led to the question. While his role was fictional, the role made Daniel really think about racism in today’s society — especially when it’s so prevalent in his own industry.
Racism has been a hot topic in Hollywood especially since the #OscarsSoWhite controversy that resulted after the 2016 Oscar nominees were announced as a primarily white bill. The Sept. 18 Emmys proved to be much more progressive with more diversity amongst its nominees and winners, but clearly Daniel thinks there’s still plenty of catching up to do.
Daniel also commented on anti-Semitism (“I’m amazed it still exists”) and offered a reason for why gay actors don’t come out in Hollywood (“I suppose then people just want to cast you as gay”). On a lighter note, he revealed whether he would be willing to play his iconic role of Harry Potter again.
“No one’s asked me about it and I definitely don’t think that I would do it at this point, certainly,” he said. “It’s only been six years [since last playing Potter] and I’m really enjoying being able to do lots of different stuff at the moment. Maybe if 30 years had passed I would be thinking differently.”
But never fear, HP fans — Daniel said in another interview that he would never “close the door” on the idea of bringing Harry back. If it’s going to be a long while before we see Daniel as Harry again, though, maybe he can channel his wizardly ways to help make some changes with racism in Hollywood!
