We are completely devastated over the tragic news of Shawty Lo’s death, but who exactly is this rapper who lost his life in a scary car accident? We have everything you need to know about him right here.
Shawty Lo died at the age of 40 on Sept. 21 after a terrible car crash in Atlanta, during which his car hit a guardrail, rammed into a bunch of trees and caught on fire. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene, police confirm. Get to know the rapper here:
1. He was in a rap group and you’ve totally heard their hit song
Before becoming a solo artist, Shawty was a member of D4L, which stands for “Down For Life.” The group is best known for their 2006 hip-hop hit “Laffy Taffy,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 100 charts. The group disbanded after the song’s success, and Shawty began his solo career in Dec. 2007.
2. He had his own record label
At the same time as D4L formed in 2003, Shawty also started a record label called D4L Records in Atlanta. In 2011, he signed the company over to G-Unit South for $10 million, and in 2015, he struck a new deal with Grown Money Entertainment. Some of the label’s artists include Lil’ Mark, Stuntman and G-Child, among others.
3. He has ELEVEN children
Shawty is reportedly a dad to 11 different kids, the first of which was born when he was just 17 years old. His children, nine daughters and two sons, were fathered by ten different women.
4. He was in a highly publicized feud with another famous rapper
Shawty and T.I.‘s feud made headlines in 2008 when they released the diss songs “Dunn Dun” and “What Up, What’s Haapnin,” respectively. The guys even had an in-person confrontation at the 2008 Dirty Awards, which forced the ceremony to be shut down after police had to use pepper spray on them! However, they publicly ended the feud in March 2009 when they took the stage together for T.I’s farewell concert, and T.I. confirmed that the whole thing was “exaggerated” by the media.
5. He almost had a reality show
The rapper was set to star in All My Babies’ Mamas, a show about his life as a dad to 11 children and their different mothers, but Oxygen pulled it from the lineup in Jan. 2013 before an episode ever aired.
