The season premiere of ‘Lethal Weapon’ is finally here, introducing the world to the new Murtaugh and Riggs. Move over, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover — there are two stars taking over Fox’s new show and they may just win over your hearts.
In the world of reboots, it’s no surprise that Lethal Weapon became a thing on Fox. However, unlike many reboots, this was good. While keeping the feel and tone of the original film, it didn’t try to be exactly like it, and its stars carry the series with chemistry that was really impressive. First, you get to meet Clayne Crawford, the actor who took on the role previously played by Mel Gibson, Martin Riggs. Claye wows from the minute he takes the screen as Riggs, dealing with the loss of his wife and then basically hoping every day he dies in the line of duty.
“I think he’s going to get to a place where he realizes that he can’t take his own life and that makes him f–king insane,” Clayne told HollywoodLife.com while at PaleyFest. “I think this is all really fresh for Riggs right now, so he’s in that place where he’s just trying to make sense of his life. I think it’ll begin to elevate. I think there’s going to have be more sadness in his life. We’re going to learn things that are definitely going to affect Riggs and take him deeper down the rabbit hole.”
After that dinner scene — that yes, you teared up, too — Riggs does have “a little hope,” he told us. “I think we’re gonna get away from the sadness of it all and just this young guy kind of wild and free,” Clayne added. Well, we’re buying it. Plus, his chemistry with Damon Wayans‘ Murtaugh is definitely convincing, because it’s real. “It’s Damon f–king Wayans. I just love him, and he’s so good at what he does. I just show up. It was instant, whatever that thing is that makes good chemistry.”
