After watching ‘This Is Us,’ many were left wondering — how do you go on from here? How do you top that? Well, the answers are here. Warning: there are things in this story that will give away that big ending twist. Also, you may cry again.
At the end of the This is Us premiere, we found out that we were actually watching a flashback when it came to the Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) scenes — and that the other three stars who shared their birthdays were their children, 36 years later. Needless to say, there were hints throughout the pilot, and if you rewatch it (maybe more than once), you’ll catch them all. However, those are strategically placed.
“There are little things in the pilot that you won’t notice that are the entire basis of the third episode of the show,” series creator Dan Fogelman told EW following the premiere. “There are things that are going to happen in this season in the seventh episode that will be the most important thing that happens in the third season of the show.”
Milo also spoke to us at PaleyFest in Beverly Hills just weeks before the premiere about where the show could go after that first episode. “Dan has said that we’re going to see Jack and Rebecca through decades,” he said. “I think the idea is we’re going to see everything — the all encompassing world of a marriage and parenthood and dealing with the curveballs that get thrown at you every day.”
So going forward, we’ll see Mandy and Milo’s characters really moving forward after losing a child, and adopting one. “You know, there’s loss in life, and I think how does anybody deal with loss in life at the same time as you’ve got two bundles of joy?” he said. “There’s sweet with the sour. And no matter what, you’ve got to try and make the best of the situation. You’ve got to choose to be happy. You’ve got pain, but you’ve got to choose to be happy.”
