This is just devastating. Atlanta rapper and former D4L frontman Shawty Lo died on Sept. 21 in a horrific car accident in Atlanta. His car caught fire after crashing into trees. Shawty was just 40 years old.
The tragic news was confirmed by Shawty’s brother on Shawty’s official Twitter page. “My brother has passed he is no longer here but his spirit, his kind heart, and his music will live on,” his brother tweeted. “Long live Shawty Lo King of Bankhead.”
Shawty, who’s real name was Carlos Walker, was confirmed as the victim in the crash in Atlanta by local news outlets. Fulton County police say the crash happened around 2:20 a.m. when Shawty’s 2016 Audi crashed over a guardrail, hit several trees and caught fire, according to WSB-TV Atlanta. Police also revealed that Shawty was ejected and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two women were also in the car and were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening. The crash was originally reported as a hit-and-run.
Before going solo, Shawty was a part of the rap group D4L. The group is best known for the 2005 song “Laffy Taffy.” Shawty released his solo album, Units in the City, in 2008. One of his most notable singles is “Dey Know.”
Shawty reportedly leaves behind 11 children. His reality show, All My Babies’ Mamas, was supposed to premiere in 2013, but never made it to air after major backlash. The show was set to follow Shawty and his 11 children, along with their 10 different mothers. At the time, Shawty told MTV News: “You can hate all you want to, I didn’t ask for it. It just happened. Now that it happened, I’m supposed to turn my back against it? If I wasn’t taking care of my kids then you would really dog me out, but I’m taking care of my kids, providing for my family. I don’t know what else to say.”
