LinkedIn Founder Reid Hoffman has an enticing proposition for Donald Trump. The GOP candidate’s refusal to release his tax returns has prompted Reid to pledge up to $5 million to charity if he ponies up before the final debate on October 19! Will Trump take the bait?
Silicon Valley heavyweight Reid Hoffman has discovered a passionate crowdfunding campaign by Marine Cop veteran Pete Kiernan, 26, who wants Donald Trump to release his tax returns. Pete is attempting to raise $25,000, and if Trump releases his tax forms, he’ll donate every penny to non-profits that assist veterans, like Team Rubicon, the Special Ops Warrior Foundation, and the Yellow Ribbon Fund. Reid, the founder of LinkedIn, was inspired by Pete’s campaign, and has vowed to match his donations to the tune of millions of dollars! He explained why Trump showing his forms is so important through a passionate post:
“Given Trump’s vocal support of veterans, I imagine he will recognize the great good that can come from Kiernan’s proposal,” Reid wrote on Medium. “But taking Trump’s own 2012 offer to President Obama into account, I’d like to assist Kiernan in his campaign. If Kiernan’s campaign hits or exceeds its target, I will match the total amount he reaches with a 5x contribution, up to $5 million. In other words, if Kiernan raises $200,000 on Crowdpac.com, I’ll contribute $1 million to the campaign. If he raises $1 million, I’ll contribute $5 million.
“Trump can help voters make more informed decisions on Election Day and support many worthy veterans’ organizations at the same time. It would show the American people that he understands that committing to serve them comes with special obligations and responsibilities that don’t exist for private citizens.
So I ask you to support this campaign and spread the word to others. The American people deserve to know what’s on Trump’s tax returns. And Trump must show that he truly embraces accountability and transparency, and understands what it means to work on behalf of the public interest.”
Wow! What an amazing thing these men are doing! The significance of Trump not releasing his tax returns is great. Every president and major presidential candidate, save for President Gerald Ford, has released their returns in the last 40 years. So why isn’t Trump? Hillary Clinton released eight years of returns when she ran for president in 2008. She released returns again in this race, as did all the other candidates.
