Down goes Novak Djokovic! The top male tennis player in the world was defeated by Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka in the US Open Men’s Final on Sept. 11. Not familiar with Stan? Get to know the tennis pro right here!
1. Stan is one of the world’s best players as well.
Although Novak, 29, is the world’s No. 1 tennis player, Stan, 31, isn’t far behind at the No. 3 spot. And after an epic win like this, Stan might just creep up on that top spot! Even being neck and neck with each other, though, Stand and Novak are actually good friends!
2. This isn’t his first Grand Slam singles win.
Before his big 2016 US Open victory, Stan also won the 2014 Australian Open and the 2015 French Open. With this win, Stan’s on a streak of winning one Grand Slam title every year — not too shabby huh?
3. He’s an Olympic gold medalist!
As if it isn’t cool enough to be a three-time Grand Slam tournament winner, Stan has also earned a gold medal in his career. He partnered with Roger Federer in the men’s doubles event at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, and the two of them took home the gold. He also got the honor of carrying the Swiss flag at the 2012 London Summer Olympics!
4. His best shot is a one-handed backhand.
Stan has become known as one of the best one-handed backhanders in professional tennis, also establishing a reputation as one of the faster servers in the game as well. Surely he pulled out his best moves in the win over Novak!
5. Despite his stellar career, there was still a lot of pressure on Stan taking on Novak at the US Open.
Stan may only be two spots behind Novak in the world rankings, but his win/loss record against Novak doesn’t quite reflect that. Going into the US Open final, Novak the Djokovic/Wawrinka matchup 19-4. Like the super close US Open final, though, most of their matches have been neck and neck and their rivalry is considered highly competitive. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens the next time these two play each other!
