“An uncool thought to have: “is that guy walking in the dark behind me a rapist? Never mind, he’s Asian.” Lena Dunham tweeted this on July 11, 2011, and the tweet has somehow resurfaced in September 2016. Needless to say, the offensive tweet has caused a massive uproar. It’s unclear how the five-year-old tweet was rediscovered, but its racist nature isn’t slipping by unnoticed by fans, who have called for her to “delete her account,” for one thing:
@lenadunham @jonny_is_good wow Lena way to deny Asian men's agency

. @lenadunham you CANNOT be so lost in #whiteprivilege that you think this is funny. #racist #problematic #youknowbetter

@lenadunham What a gross, racist thing to say. Seriously consider deleting your account.

@lenadunham hope nobody reads it who got raped by an Asian.

@lenadunham @jonny_is_good Welp, that *is* an uncool though to have. On account of it's racist and all.

@lenadunham "Is that girl walking in the dark behind me a racist? Never mind, it's Lena Dunham."

@lenadunham How do you even respond to something so wrong on so many levels? Does she actually know any Asian men? That they are all unique?
— Kate (@KTViewsHerWorld) September 3, 2016
Yeah, Lena’s not getting off the hook for this one. The backlash is strong for several reasons. For one, Lena is insinuating that some races are more likely than others to rape people. For another, she’s lumping all Asian men together into one generalized category. It’s insulting to those who have been raped by Asian men, and insulting to those she thinks are more likely to be rapists. It’s gross. Someone managed to get in one sick burn at Lena that’s probably going to sting the most:
@lenadunham "is that guy walking in the dark behind me in Girls? Never mind, he's Asian"

Bam! Meanwhile, Lena is still facing scrutiny for her bizarre remarks about Odell Beckham, Jr. The Girls star/creator told a story about sitting next to the athlete at the Met Gala, and felt like he was rejecting her because of her body type. This is all simply because he was on his phone during the dinner; they never actually talked to each other. Naturally, she’s been under fire for that, and has since apologized. She’s yet to speak out about the tweet.
HollywoodLifers, are you shocked by Lena’s tweet? Tell us in the comments.
