With a gold medal win under her belt, gymnast Laurie Hernandez is ready to take on her next challenge as a contestant on ‘Dancing With The Stars.’ But the teenager is technically still in school, so how will she balance both? Let her tell you!
“I had a pretty harsh training schedule leading up to the Olympics. Through that, I learned how to fit in school,” Laurie explained in an interview with People. “I’d do it over the weekends and at home in between workouts, so I think I’ll be fine.”
At just 16 years old, Laurie has likely been balancing schoolwork and gymnastics training her whole life. And while the Rio Summer Olympics were held when Laurie didn’t have school, she had been training for several months before competing with the Final Five. After all, you can’t put on a gold medal-winning performance without tons and tons of practice!
Laurie also has the support of her parents for her DWTS endeavor, so they’ll surely be helping her stay on top of her schoolwork too. In fact, she used to watch DWTS with her parents and her dad even predicted that she’d be on the show one day. There’s no way he would want her to miss the opportunity to dance just because of school!
So Laurie is confident she’ll be able to balance school and Dancing, but is she confident about how she’ll do with partner Val Chmerkovskiy? While Choreography is something she’s used to because of her gymnastics routines, Laurie said that ballroom dancing is a “totally different” ballgame. But she did take ballet when she was little, and she thinks Val is a “mastermind,” so Laurie is ready to take on the challenge — and we can’t wait to watch her!
